Do/Does/Did

DO/DOES

We use do, does and did when asking questions. We use ‘do’ or ‘does’ depending on the subject.

We use ‘do’ when the subject is I, we, they or you. For example:

  • Where do you work?
  • Do they want to go by train?
  • When do we go to the station?
  • Do I have train tickets?

We use ‘does’ when the subject is he, she and it. For example:

  • How fast does the train (it) travel?
  • How many times does he travel to London each month?
  • How long does the journey (it) take from Birmingham to London?
  • How much does Maria (she) earn?

DID

Did is the past tense of both ‘do’ and ‘does’. For example:

  • Did you go to work yesterday?
  • Did they have booster vaccinations last week?
  • Did we go to London by train?
  • Did it give you a headache?

NEGATIVES

The negative form of ‘do’ is ‘do not…’.

The negative form of ‘does’ is ‘does not…’

The negative form of ‘did’ is ‘did not…’
