ADVERBS

Words that give us more information about the verb. Adverbs give us information about how something happens, or how something is done.

There are different kinds of adverbs. Most adverbs end in –ly, but not all. For example: occasionally, quickly, sometimes, often and never.

Adverbs usually go next to the verb. For example:

  • I always watch TV.
  • I never go to the cinema.
  • I usually have cereal for breakfast.

There are also adverbs of time. For example: tomorrow, an hour ago, next week, in 2012 etc.

Adverbs of time usually go at the beginning or end of a sentence. For example:

  • Tomorrow, I’m going to the beach. / I’m going to the beach tomorrow.
  • In 2012 I bought a motorcycle. / I bought a motorcycle in 2012.

Note that well is an adverb. Good is an adjective.

For example: I speak English well. (Not: I speak English good.)
